Wasps are aggressive stinging insects that pose serious safety threats to Temecula and Murrieta residents, particularly during late summer and fall when colonies reach peak size and food sources become scarce. Paper wasps are the most common species in our area. Wasps can sting multiple times and often attack in swarms when their nest is threatened, making them dangerous for families, pets, and anyone with sting allergies. In Southern California’s extended warm season, wasp colonies can remain active well into November, making early professional intervention important for preventing large, established colonies that become increasingly dangerous as autumn approaches.
Are they aggressive?
Paper wasps will sting to defend their nests. Their sting is painful and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Where do they nest?
Common wasps build papery, open-celled nests in sheltered areas—under eaves, deck railings, or inside light fixtures. Colonies are typically started by a single queen in early spring. Most wasps build nests in protected areas like eaves, wall voids, underground burrows, and dense vegetation common in our foothill communities.
What do they look like?
Paper wasps are slender with long legs and narrow waists. They are usually brown with yellow or reddish markings and range from 5/8 to 3/4 inch in length.
How are they treated?
Professional wasp removal is crucial for safety. DIY removal attempts often result in multiple stings and incomplete nest elimination, leading to recurring problems. Proper treatment involves proper protective equipment, identification of all nest locations, and appropriate insecticide application methods.
